Volunteers…the heart of CGS!

by Kathleen Beitiks

National Volunteer Week will be celebrated April 23-29, giving the California Genealogical Society (CGS) the opportunity to extend a big THANK YOU to members who donate their time and talents to our 119-year-old organization. Volunteers are the heart of CGS and we couldn’t do it without them.

As the Volunteer Coordinator for the CGS, once a month I tally all of the hours that volunteers to CGS contribute to our organization and I am continually blown away by the numbers.

My tallies always come up with more than 500 hours a month, but truth be told, there are plenty more hours that don’t always get counted. In my conversations with volunteers, I always come across people who say, “Oh, I didn’t log in those calls I did from home because it only took me a few minutes,” or “l love doing this, so I never think of adding it to the sign-in sheet.”

Why Volunteer?
Once I read an article about “why” people volunteer and it contained a list of 70 reasons. As you can imagine, the reasons ranged from “for fun!” or “to pass on what I have learned to others (and learn something myself!)” or “to meet new people” to “because someone asked me!”

When I asked a friend why she decided to volunteer for another organization, this was her reason: “My husband retired and he was driving me crazy at home all of the time.” OK, so maybe that doesn’t fall under the “altruism” category, but it just goes to show you that everyone has his or her own reason for volunteering.

How has volunteering for CGS evolved over the years?
CGS has been around since 1898 and many people do not realize that at one time it had paid staff members. So, it makes me even more impressed with our team when I realize how much work our volunteers have taken upon themselves to keep our organization thriving.

We have all different types of volunteers: those who commit once a month or once a week, those who are available for individual events, those who want to work from home and some who want to be on call.

What kinds of things do our volunteers work on?
Here is a partial list of the areas: Book Repair, Capital Campaign, Desk and Patron Services, Education Programs, Events, Finance, Investments, Library Services, Manuscript Collections, Membership, Outreach, Publications and Marketing, Research & Look-ups, Strategic Planning, Technology, and our Website.

Increasingly, we have been hearing from volunteers who want help, but would prefer to “Job Share.” For instance, the “Events Coordinator” position is a good candidate for job sharing. It’s an opportunity to help CGS coordinate events that educate our members about different aspects of genealogy and even bring in revenue so we can offer more services.

THANK YOU AGAIN to all of our volunteers at the California Genealogical Society – and to those of you who want to learn more about ways you can become a member of our team – just shoot me an email!

May 2013 Volunteer Update and Help Wanted Notices

Volunteer Coordinator Linda Okazaki sent this update and request.

Volunteers at the California Genealogical Society continue to inspire me. Our members donate hundreds of hours each month in order to keep our society running smoothly. For those of you whose committee work occurs outside of the library, please remember to submit your monthly hours to your board liaison. An electronic time sheet is will be ready in a few months. Until then, document your hours the old fashioned way!
Numerous positions are available at CGS and your help is always welcome. There is a task for everyone; small jobs or big, weekly, monthly or just one time. Like to travel now that you are retired? Busy with children and a full time job? Come find a task that fits your schedule and lifestyle. Email Linda Okazaki if you’d like to join our team.

A Call for Volunteers from Our New Coordinator

The California Genealogical Society is looking for volunteers! Do you have some time to spare? There are a variety of positions waiting for someone like you.
Are you good with computers, social media and a good writer? Then join our technology or marketing teams.

Work full time but have some talent with Webinars? We can sure use your help.

Great with people in person or on the phone? Then join our membership team.

Have skills with numbers or are good with finances? Come help our treasurer and her group of dedicated volunteers.
Have experience with database management? Let us know. We’d love your assistance.

Are you very organized and detail oriented? Don’t mind running to the court houses in San Francisco, Alameda or Contra Costa counties? We’ve got a spot for you.

Most fun of all is volunteering at our front desk. Our library is only open because of our fantastic Desk Staff. Can you commit to one Saturday a month? Would you like to be trained as a substitute or added to the list? We can use several interested people.

If you would like to become a volunteer, or if you are a current volunteer who wants to try something new, just fill out a form online or in the library. Or send me an email
Volunteering isn’t just good for our society, it’s also a great way to make new friends and meet fellow genealogists. Who knows, maybe one of them can even help you break down that brick wall.

Linda Okazaki is a fourth-generation Californian, born in San Francisco and raised in Marin County. She received a B.S. in Human Development and an M.A. in Education. After leaving a career working with hospitalized children in Sacramento and Oakland, she discovered a passion for volunteering in the local schools.

As a child, Linda and her mother would explore old cemeteries, just for fun. She initially became interested in genealogy fifteen years ago when her daughter needed help with a school project, but didn’t get serious until joining the California Genealogical Society two years ago, after taking the Intermediate Genealogy Series.

Her love of tending her roses and dwarf fruit trees ties right into her research of the Orchard surname. She also loves to travel and still can’t seem to get enough of those old cemeteries. Linda is currently researching her husband’s Japanese-American ancestry and aspires to write a children’s book about that topic.
