Two Member Coffees in June!

Saturday June 11, 2011, 9:30 a.m.
or

Thursday June 23, 2011, 11:00 a.m.

California Genealogical Society and Library
2201 Broadway, Suite LL2
Oakland, California 94612

Attention, members!

Please choose a date and join us for a get-together at the library.

Who: Any member who would like to learn more about the library, see what the society has to offer, and compare notes with other members.

What: Tour the library, learn about what is going on at the society, meet other members, share research interests and get a little help with your research.

Membership Committee Chair Sandy Fryer and Volunteer Coordinator Jane Lindsey cooked up the coffee idea as a way to network and to learn more about how best to assist our members with their family history research. It is also a way for members to discover volunteer opportunities at the library.

The coffees last about an hour, but members are encouraged to stay and do some research.

Sandy plans to schedule member coffees twice a month so if you can't make a date in June, please watch the society calendar for future events.

The coffees are limited to fifteen members. Please RSVP online or by telephone at 510-663-1358.

Jane's Report from Sacramento

CGS President, Jane Lindsey, shared a cup of coffee and enjoyed an afternoon with ten Sacramento area members at a meeting hosted by Janet Feil at the Belle Cooledge Branch Library yesterday, May 7, 2008. Elaine Adamson brought her cousin, Pat Procida, who became the newest member of CGS.

The group had an informal discussion about upcoming events at the society. Members had several suggestions which Jane will report to CGS:

  • Sell handouts from major CGS events. Offer the syllabus to those who cannot attend the conference for a fee plus mailing costs.
  • Create Surname and Locale sections on the CGS Web site to allow members to network with others with similar interests.
  • Provide meetings summaries for members who could not attend. Jane suggested that members check the CGS blog or Steve Danko's Genealogy Blog if they miss a meeting. Steve has posted extensive reports on CGS meetings that he has attended.
Several members also expressed an interest in forming a carpool for a day of research to the CGS Library.

L. to R. (front row): Virginia Doyle, Helen Sheahan, Shirley Williams, Dorothy Romo; (back row): Jane Lindsey, Amy Dorman. Lynne Roberts, Janet Feil (hostess), Elaine Adamson, Pat Procida and Ron Davis.

San Francisco Coffee - April 2, 2008

The next California Genealogical Society Membership Coffee will be held on Wednesday, April 2, 2008, 10 a.m. - 12 noon, at the Mechanics' Institute Library cafe in San Francisco's Financial District. Members who live in San Francisco will be receiving personal invitations by phone or email and will be encouraged to bring a friend who is interested in genealogy. Immediately following the coffee, at noon, the regularly scheduled public tour of the Mechanics' Institute Library takes place. The Institute is private and only members are allowed inside the library, so this will be a unique opportunity to tour this historic facility. Reservations will be required since space is limited. The society acknowledges the generosity of Mary Beth Frederick who is a member of the California Genealogical Society and the Mechanics' Institute and who graciously made the arrangements.

Plans are also underway for a membership coffee at the Belle Cooledge Branch Library in Sacramento on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Members in greater Sacramento area will be receiving their invitations in the coming weeks.

CGS President Jane Lindsey is looking for a member who lives in the Los Angeles area to help organize a membership coffee to coincide with the Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree 2008, which will be held June 27-28-29 at the Burbank Airport Marriott Hotel and Convention Center.
