Introducing the New 2014 Directors

The California Genealogical Society is pleased to introduce five members who have consented to serve and have been elected to the Board of Directors in 2014. They are Felicia Addison, Tim Cox, Edi Daly, Glenn Koch, and Marcelle White.

Felicia Addison became fascinated by an older sister’s school project and decided at age twelve that she would one day pursue family research. Twenty-seven years later a television commercial for Ancestry.com was the final bug that bit her with an incredible passion for genealogy. By profession, Felicia has been a Customs House Broker for more than twenty years. This profession assisted her in research during traveling for work with being stuck in hotels all over the country with a laptop, internet and awesome room service, which is perfect for the hobby of genealogy! Felicia has been a member of The African American Genealogical Society of Northern California (AAGSNC) for five years where she’s served on the Outreach and Program committees and is currently the Treasurer.

Tim Cox has been a family historian and genealogist for more than 25 years. He is a member of numerous genealogical societies across the country. His volunteer duties at California Genealogical Society (CGS) in Oakland, CA have included being the Education and Events coordinator 2010-2012 and advisor for 2013; co- planner of Ancestry Day 2011 & 2013; Registration Coordinator for Ancestry Day 2011 & 2013; organizer and co-facilitator of Writing Your Family History; and facilitator of the monthly RootsMagic special interest group since 2011. He has been an active member of the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG) since 2009; and has attended local, regional, and national conferences for Family History Expo; Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS); National Genealogical Society (NGS); Genealogy Jamboree; APG Professional Management Conference; and RootsTech. His genealogical education includes courses with National Institute on Genealogical Research (NIGR); National Institute for Genealogical Studies (NIGS); and Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG). Tim has given multiple presentations at CGS, and other local genealogical societies, and more recently, at Their Roots Are Showing and Ancestry Day 2013.

Edie Daly has served as Interim Treasurer since August 20, 2013. She is currently employed as a senior accountant for MBS Accountancy Corporation and is completing a B.A. in Accounting and will be pursing her C.P.A. shortly. She is a certified QuickBooks pro-advisor. Edi recent works with non-profits of various sizes will assist with current and future needs of CGS. She has extensive accounting and management experience and is also one of the Chief Financial Officers for California Health Collaborative, a large non- profit.

Glenn Koch started genealogy in the eighth grade when his English teacher assigned him a research project. Originally from Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, Glenn is the ninth generation of his family in the same county. Glen is also a collector of antique postcards, specializing in cards of San Francisco. He also collects San Francisco related vintage photography. Glen is the author of two books, San Francisco Golden Age Postcards and Picturing Long Beach Island, New Jersey. He also co-authored a 250-year history of the church congregation where he grew up.

For ten years he served on the Board of Directors of the Lehigh County (PA) Historical Society, filling various positions. He is the founder of the Allentown (Pa) Preservation League, a citywide historic preservation organization. He was also one of the founders, and lead proponents, of the Beach Haven historic district on Long Beach Island, New Jersey. He is currently the moderator of the Berks County (Pa) Genealogy group on Facebook. He is a graduate of Muhlenberg College, in Allentown, Pa. with a B.A. in Human Resources Administration. Glenn is a Senior Underwriting Consultant for Aetna, Inc. of Hartford, CT.

Marcelle White has been fascinated by family history ever since junior high, when she received a copy of a distant family member’s genealogical study and reels of old audio recordings with great aunts and uncles. She has been actively investigating her family lines for the past fifteen years, and especially enjoys related projects, such as transcribing collections of family letters from the late 1800s through the 1930s. “It’s been wonderful to work with these materials and to find ways to make them available to a wider audience. They really make history come to life.”

Marcelle has been involved in the nonprofit world for more than 20 years – as a volunteer and as an employee. For the past 12+ years, she’s created free Web-based information resources for family of children with learning disabilities. Through this work she’s come to appreciate the ever-expanding ways information can be shared and new audiences reached. Marcelle has been a member of the California Genealogical Society since 2009. Since early 2013, she’s been helping the Library Committee raise funds through eBay sales, and she looks forward to finding ways to increase the awareness of CGS and to expand its membership. She has a B.A. degree in English and American Literature from UC San Diego.

Using Snagit to Capture Items for Your Genealogy Research

Whatever you can see on your screen, Snagit easily captures it for your immediate use. Snagit is a screenshot program that captures images, video, and even audio. Snagit works on PC and Mac.

You can capture specific regions, windows, a full screen, scrolling windows, menus, entire Web pages, and create video recordings with less than three clicks! The images and video recordings can be edited and shared with others or be included in your research project and genealogy database.

This class will show how easy it is to use the tool to do these things:

Capture a screen shot of what is on your monitor
Enhance these digital images with text and other effects
Tag the images for easy retrieval later
Record a video
Organize the images with easy auto-storing
Share images and videos via email and social media sites
Insert images into reports and other projects

This class is a demonstration on Snagit and is not an actual class with instructions. Laptops are not required.

What You Missed: April 2013 Membership Meeting and Volunteer Appreciation Ceremony

Members gathered on Saturday, April 13, 2013, for a special celebration of volunteerism and creativity. Volunteer Coordinator Linda Okazaki and Membership Coordinator Diana Edwards unveiled a new meeting format and started a new tradition to honor long-standing volunteers. It was a success by every measure.

Most of the members in attendance arrived early at 12:00 p.m. with lunch in hand to share company and lively conversation in the Sherman Room. Beverages were provided by the board of directors.

Members shared lunch and lively conversation.

After the celebratory cake was cut and dessert finished, the festivities moved to the classroom for the program and a few words of welcome by President Jeff Vaillant. Director Tom Gesner updated members on several changes in the library, including new computers, shelving, and display racks. Tom also announced three special events planned for the fall.

Next up was the volunteer recognition part of the program. Linda Okazaki gave some statistics, "Of our more than 1000 members, 170 have contributed their time in some way to the society. Ninety-three current members are scheduled to work in 2013 and fourteen new volunteers have joined our team since January."

Honorees Marston Watson (representing his wife, Kathy), Gloria Hanson, Pat Bonderud, Barbara Hill, and Dick Rees. Honorees not in attendance: Lois Elling, Ken Haughton, Lorna Jones.

Eight individuals who have held membership for more than two decades and who continue to serve the California Genealogical Society as active volunteers were presented with certificates of recognition.

Kathy Watson, a member for twenty years since 1993, has held a variety of roles and currently serves as chair of both the Computer and Technology Committees. Kathy was unable to attend so her husband Marston, a past board member, accepted on her behalf.
Lois Elling, also a member for twenty years since 1993, creates every layout of the California Nugget and has designed the society's bookmarks, business cards, and branding graphics.
Gloria Hanson, a member for twenty-one years since 1992, has held a variety of positions including Desk Duty. Gloria is well known in the society for her extensive knowledge of Norwegian genealogy. She currently volunteers in the library as a copy cataloger.
Pat Bonderud, a member for twenty-three years since 1989, helped with the architectural design of the media room and layout of the library. Pat partners with Linda Darby as Special Projects Co-chair. The two have organized the manuscript collection and vertical files.
Lorna Jones, a member for twenty-nine years since 1984, has worked in a variety of positions in the library. For several years she led the French-Canadian Special Interest Group.
Barbara Hill, a member for thirty-two years since 1981, volunteers on the Library Committee and handles library acquisitions. Barbara performs monthly desk duty on Saturdays.
Dick Rees, a member for thirty-three years since 1980, has worn many hats for the society. These days he does special project work, teaches some introductory genealogy classes, and serves on the Book Repair Committee.
Kenneth Haughton, a member for thirty-five years since 1978, is our member of longest standing who continues to actively serve the society. Ken served on the board of directors and was CFO for many years. He is currently an advisor to the Investment Committee.

Diana Edwards introduced the last part of the program: Preserving Your Genealogical Work Through Publishing. Displayed around the room were charts, books, articles, and other materials created by members – wonderful family treasures that will be cherished by family members for years to come.

Tim Cox served as master of ceremonies and guide as he went around the room and introduced each item on display. Tim introduced the authors/creators and described their work.

After the program members were able to browse and examine the displayed items more closely. Past-president Steve Harris gave tours of his city directory library.

Linda Okazaki proclaimed the day "a smashing success."

After collecting digital images from online sources and manually scanning paper documents and photos for over twenty years, Tim Cox found a management method that works for his digital files. Tim is back with an encore of this popular class. He will demonstrate how to name files for easy identification, how to organize folders that make it easy to find them, and how to properly identify scanned photographs.

The class is limited to thirty participants and is a free benefit of membership. Non-member fee is $20.00 (non-refundable) and can be applied towards membership on the day of the class.

Members Gathered after a Week of Teaching and Learning at SLIG 2013

The California Genealogical Society was well-represented at the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG) this year. They took the time to pose for a group photo and to send me some of their observations.

Our "far-flung" member from Chicago, Thomas MacEntee, coordinated a new offering this year – Course 6 – A Genealogists' Guide to the Internet Galaxy. He described the course as a "boot camp for genealogists who feel overwhelmed by technology and also have a fear of falling behind in terms of their 'tech quotient.'"

Cath Madden Trindle, CG, was an instructor for Course 1 – American Research and Records: Focus on Localities, coordinated by Paula Stuart-Warren, CG, FUGA, FMGS. Cath has recently retired so this was her last teaching "gig."

Lisa Gorrell attended Course 4 – Germany: Advanced Tools and Methods coordinated by F. Warren Bittner, CG.

I had a great time at my second SLIG, meeting lots of people who do German research. Our class had several certified genealogists which added to the knowledge. We learned about German history and how important it is to know the history of your area. I was able to spend a couple of afternoons at the Family History Library and found an 1807 marriage record for my husband's Wollenweber line in Kusel and went back another generation!

Tim Cox was enrolled in Course 9: Advanced Genealogical Methods coordinated by Thomas Jones, Ph.D., CG, CGL.

Linda Okazaki and Diana Powell attended Course 5: Researching in Washington DC without Leaving Home, coordinated by Pamela Boyer Sayer, CG, CGL, and Richard Sayer, CG. This was Linda's first SLIG:

I was a little intimidated going in, but on Sunday night there was a get-together and I was chatting with a lovely woman only to discover she was my co-instructor! The rest of the week was a whirlwind of information. A high point for me was the reception and banquet on the last night. I spoke with Valerie Elkins who has been helping me with my Japanese research. She introduced me to Eric Stroschien, a professional genealogist with expertise in Japanese-American internment camp records. The timing couldn't have been better. I am eager to put into use all that I learned from the Sayres, then consult with Eric before heading to Washington, D.C. in February.

The Utah Genealogical Association's Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy offers a full week of instruction by national experts. Students receive at least twenty hours of in-depth instruction. The 2014 lineup of courses has been published. It's not too early to start planning for next year!

Genealogy Writing Series Begins Saturday, February 16, 2013

The California Genealogical Society will present an encore of our popular series Writing Your Family History: Start Now. By the end of the course, you will be ready to start writing, or will be already writing, a family history with confidence and style!

Who Should Take this Course?
This course is for genealogists and family historians who are ready to transform their research into a quality family history.

Course Details
This course will meet for a five-hour session one Saturday a month at the library in the Learning Center. Class size is limited to twelve participants. All sessions are on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with one hour break for lunch.

The course will provide participants with all the information and assistance needed to get started on writing a family history. The course includes

A new year heralds good organizational intentions so be sure to sign up for the first "Tech Saturday" in 2013. Tim Cox has created a new workshop featuring some of his favorite tips and techniques. Learn how using Excel™ and Word™, along with your genealogy database, can help keep you organized. Creating timelines, lists, logs, or reports may show you some obvious answers in information that you've already collected or identify holes where more information is needed.

This workshop is for beginners using Microsoft Excel and Word 2010. Tim will look at some of the differences in versions 2007 vs. 2010. Earlier versions will not be discussed. Laptops are strongly encouraged.

Anatomy of the Sanborn Maps Workshop with Melinda Kashuba

One of the things the California Genealogical Society does really well is events. Our classes, workshops and seminars are usually well-attended and more-than-meet expectations. Melinda Kashuba‘s Sanborn Maps workshop last December was a home run.

Events Coordinator Tim Cox and his team do a fantastic job at handling every aspect from scheduling, through execution. Online registration tools are now an integral part of the operation and make the collection of statistics a snap.

Tim sent these numbers:

Total registered: 29
Cancellations: 2
No show: 1 (non-member)
Non-members registered: 2 (1 was a no-show and the other one joined)
Total in attendance: 26
Total evaluations returned: 15

Tim also uses online tools to send an evaluation form to participants. It makes it easy for them to send feedback. The results:

Length of workshop (2 hours) was appropriate.
Number of attendees (24) was a nice size for most. Two responded that it was too crowded to get to the maps for the hands-on experience.
The workshop met everyone's expectation! "There was enough information to demonstrate the maps' uses and advantages, but not so much that one is overwhelmed."
It was unanimous that we should invite Melinda back for a repeat workshop or have her teach on another topic.

Thing that could be improved: moving the maps to the hallway for the interactive exercises for easier access.

Here's a sampling of some of the comments:

It was great to be able to examine the large Sanborn firemaps she'd posted on the wall in detail. I have a much better understanding on where to look for such maps, as well. – Dan Ford.

She had a nice mixture of listening to lecture and actively using our knowledge that required some physical movement. She was able to tie it altogether to make a very understandable and usable lecture. – Cheryl Schmidt.

The informal atmosphere made it easy to ask questions of the instructor. The presenter was well informed and the hand-outs were helpful for reference. – Ed Souza.

The topic was interesting and the speaker enthusiastic. I particularly enjoyed the exercise of looking at the maps. Learned lots. – Chris Pattillo.

Melinda is very knowledgeable and well organized. I thought she did a great job of presenting the information. – Marcia Holstrom.

CGS Member Speakers at the California Family History Expo

The California Family History Expo is just a week away and the event is shaping up to be the largest gathering of genealogists in Northern California in the last several years.

The California Genealogical Society is a local sponsor of the event and we will be present in the Exhibit Hall at Booth #57. In addition, several members of the society will be speaking at the two day conference at the Alameda County Fairgrounds, 4501 Pleasanton Avenue, Pleasanton, California.

Using Microsoft Excel 2007 for Tracking Your Genealogy Research

Excel 2007 is a powerful tool for creating spreadsheets, analyzing data already collected, and sharing information with others.

In this workshop, Tim Cox will show you how to:

Create a worksheet
Use workbooks
Format cells
Create charts and graphs
Use tables
Sort columns

and more!

You will get hands-on practice by working on some instructor created exercises. If you don't bring your laptop to class you can partner with someone and then try the exercises at home.

Skill level - beginner to intermediate.

This workshop is limited to fifteen participants and one of the free benefits for CGS members. Non-members fee is $20.00 (non-refundable) and can be applied towards a CGS membership the day of the workshop.

Preregistration is required.

Walk-ins will not be admitted.

Honored by FGS: 2010 Certificate of Appreciation Award

Sue Kaufman, Chair of the Federation of Genealogical Societies Awards Committee, informed me that the California Genealogical Society research team has been honored with a Certificate of Appreciation Award for their work on the Judge Project.

The award acknowledges the volunteer team that researched, wrote and published The Ancestry of Theodore Timothy Judge and Ellen Sheehy Judge: Including the Families of Boland, Roussel, Harman, McMurphy, Kelley, Bohane, Chapin, Freiermuth, Taylor, Moore and Farneman.

According to the FGS website, The Certificate of Appreciation was established in July 1983 and is "presented to an individual or organization expressing thanks for duty performed in an exemplary and outstanding manner." I can't think of a more worthy effort than the Judge book.

FGS honored the award winners this morning at the opening session of the annual conference in Knoxville, Tennessee. Tim Cox is there representing the society and accepted the award.

CGS President Stephen Harris has this to say about our award winners:

The Judge Project was an excellent example of teamwork, of people doing what they do best. At first, some team members thought they couldn't pull this off, or did not personally have the requisite skills. Some were daunted by the magnitude of the task. But the product is a wonderful demonstration of the level of research accuracy and completeness that we try to inculcate in all our members. Congratulations and thanks to all.

Well-Represented in Knoxville at the FGS 2010 Annual Conference

The Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) annual conference is underway at the Knoxville Convention Center in Knoxville, Tennessee. The meeting runs August 18-21, 2010 and this year's theme is “Rediscovering America’s First Frontier.” Co-Sponsors for the event are the East Tennessee Historical Society and Kentucky Historical Society.

The California Genealogical Society and Library is well-represented in far-off Tennessee. Kentucky native and CGS Events Coordinator Tim Cox is there, after a couple of days visiting family.

Member Cath Madden Trindle, CG, is presenting three lectures: Financial Considerations for Your Non-Profit Society, Grandma, Who Are You? and Wills, Estates, and Guardianships. Cath is treasurer of FGS, Projects chair for the California State Genealogical Alliance and Publications Chair for the San Mateo County Genealogical Society.

Two of our "long-distance" members have been busy blogging and tweeting from Knoxville. Amy Coffin writes the We Tree Genealogy Blog and helps out on the Pub/Mark Committee. Thomas MacEntee is the genius behind Geneabloggers and writes a personal research blog Destination: Austin Family.

All four of our members attended yesterday's Association of Professional Genealogists Professional Management Conference where Thomas sat on the Roundtable panel exploring Your Internet Presence- How to Get IT and What To Do with IT: A Discussion of What IT Is.

If you want to keep up with what is happening at the conference, Thomas set up a news feed of all the blog posts and #FGS10 tweets at Geneabloggers: Latest News From FGS Knoxville. I have a bit more news that I'll share tomorrow.

After collecting digital images from online sources and manually scanning paper documents and photos for over twenty years, Tim found a management method that works for his digital files. He will demonstrate how to name files for easy identification, how to organize folders that make it easy to find them, and how to properly identify scanned photographs.

This workshop is limited to twenty participants and is a free benefit for society members. Walk-ins will not be admitted.
