Announcing the 13th Annual Salt Lake City Research Tour April 14-21, 2013

Join CGS for a week of intensive research and lots of fun!

Past-president Jane Lindsey is leading the thirteenth annual California Genealogical Society Salt Lake City Tour to the Family History Library from Sunday to Sunday, April 14–21, 2013. Research Director Nancy Peterson will return to help lead this very popular trip.

Accommodations will be at the Shilo Inn, located three blocks from the Family History Library. The Shilo provides free high-speed internet access in every room.

The trip cost is $762 per person, double occupancy OR $1074 for a single room (airfare not included). A deposit of $200 holds one space.

The Tour Package includes:

Hotel room – 7 nights, double occupancy
Shuttle service to and from airport
Three group dinners (Sun., Wed., and Sat.)
Daily continental breakfast
Orientation and lectures
Computer assistance using the online catalog at FamilySearch.org and other websites
Optional consultation prior to the trip

Is visiting a library fun? Really?

Yes! It's so much fun members of the California Genealogical Society make the trek to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City year after year after year.

This past April, Kathie Jones took her video camera to document the society's twelfth annual tour. The result is a light-hearted look at our most popular research trip. A Trip Worth Taking: the Family History Library is the newest video offering by Jones and Shannon Reese.

The video features tour leaders Jane Lindsey and Nancy Peterson and the success stories of two of our member volunteers, Linda Okazaki and Dr. Henry Snyder.

Digging Into Your Past: Library Program with Jane Lindsey on YouTube

Past-president Jane Knowles Lindsey participated in a free event on December 1, 2011 at the Walnut Creek Library. She was one of four panelists discussing a myriad of resources for tracking down family history including online databases, where to search for vital records, and genealogy libraries. The program – Digging into Your Past: Tips and Clues on How to Pursue Your Ancestry – also featured Bill Slocum, former Director of the Oakland Regional Family History Center, Martha Whittaker, former Senior Librarian at the Sutro Library, and author Diane DeGolia. The entire ninety-minute program is viewable on YouTube.

Jane's portion on breaking down brick walls starts about 1:03:50.

In 1900, San Francisco was a Wild West boom town driven by greed. The city fathers removed cemeteries and banned burials. Research Director Nancy Peterson shares this little-known piece of San Francisco history in a new video by Shannon Reese and Kathleen Jones.

The California Genealogical Society and FamilySearch on YouTube

I was disappointed not to have been able to attend the first RootsTech Conference this past weekend in Salt Lake City. Congratulations to FamilySearch.org and to the presenters and participants. I've been following the #rootstech tweets and blog posts.

One thing caught my eye on Facebook – a reference to familysearch.org on YouTube. (Thank you, Linda Herrick Swisher.) There was something I'd been waiting to see and had no idea it was posted online.

I shared some photos last August from the interviews with Jane Lindsey and Nancy Peterson and the filming FamilySearch did at the library. Now you can see the entire film on YouTube!

California Genealogical Society and Library works with FamilySearch to provide free online access to the records of funeral homes in the San Francisco area. These records are among the few collections that date back prior to 1906 and the San Francisco earthquake and are great substitutes for death records for that time period.

Thanks very much FamilySearch!

Update 3/1/11: the California Genealogical Society and Library is starting our next collaboration with FamilySearch Indexing: the 1852 California State Census Project.

Featured on RootsTelevision!

We're so honored and pleased that our YouTube video has been added to RootsTelevision and has been selected as one of this week's New Roots Tuesday picks.

Pub/Mark Committee chair Cathy Paris created Who Do You Think We Are? from blog photos and added captions to describe all aspects of the society and our members. RootsTelevision thinks it's "a great example of how a society can showcase themselves online." We agree! And we thank Roots Television for helping us to spread our message.

YouTube Video of San Francisco Pre-1906 Earthquake

Member John Bedecarre sent the link to this amazing historical film recorded just days before the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. The footage was shot from a cable car running down Market Street towards the Ferry Building seen in the distance. John informs us that while electric street cars crossed Market, the transit system at the time had only cable cars on Market. He also notes that there were no traffic rules, no paved roads, no traffic lights or pedestrian crosswalks and that the people were pretty adept at dodging autos. Thanks, John, for sharing!
