Our Annual Appeal

To our members:

Every year about this time, CGS kicks off an appeal for donations. Letters have already been sent to all CGS members. We appreciate your support.

If you can’t find your letter, or if a non-member wishes to make a donation, it can be done using our website. Go to CaliforniaAncestors.org, click on “members” on the tool bar, and from the dropdown menu, click on “Support CGS/Donate.” At the bottom of that page is a form to be filled out for making a donation. You can print the form and mail it to us with a check, or you can use Paypal.

Thank you,

James Sorenson, President

2018 Annual Appeal: Thank you to our amazing members!

With just four days left in 2018, we are happy to report that it's been a good year for the California Genealogical Society and Library, thanks to our generous members and supporters! To date, we have received $14,923 in donations to our annual fund. We've also received an extra $10,000 for the Sherman-Haughton Fund, our endowment created for the long-term survival of the society. No donation is too small, and we are grateful for the generosity shown by friends far and near.

As you know, CGS is largely a labor of love, staffed by volunteers who do everything from organizing events, classes, and research trips, to maintaining both our physical and online collections, to greeting library visitors and answering their questions. Even so, we have considerable costs for rent and related expenses. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of our financial officers, we have seen the society through its first 120 years! (1898-2018) With your support, we hope to keep going strong for another century and beyond.

THANK YOU!

Annual Appeal: You Make Our Society Amazing

"I want to thank each and every one of you that have donated or have volunteered in some way this year. Without your incredible dedication, none of this would be possible,” says out-going President, Linda Harms Okazaki.

Why is the money needed?
Membership fees only cover 40% of The California Genealogical Society’s operating expenses; most of the rest comes from special events and tax-deductible donations from members like you.

Treasurer Kathie Jones stated, "The cost of real estate in the San Francisco Bay area continues to be our number one expense for the society---meaning our rent consumes about 70% of our budget." If you haven’t already done so, please consider contributing to the society.

Our library, with thousands of volumes, is one of the premiere genealogy libraries on the West Coast, and is one of the main reasons that many of you joined the society.  We also learned through our member survey results that The California Nugget, our biannual genealogical magazine, is another huge draw for our members.

2018 Goals
This year, the goal was again set at $15,000 to help us continue offering quality trips, classes, events and speakers for you, such as a first-ever event by the indomitable genealogy lecturer Judy G. Russell, The Legal Genealogist

Judy G. Russell with Linda Okazaki

We had a great turnout for her all-day seminar that received rave reviews from the attendees. Linda said, “It was a delight to have Judy talk to us about everything from copyright to enemy aliens, and from black sheep in the family to DNA."

Linda also wants to remind you to check your mail to see if you have received the Annual Appeal letter that was sent out in mid-November. Don’t forget that there’s a 2017 tax deduction created by contributing before year-end.

How much have we raised?
Here’s the latest numbers: so far we have raised 41 percent — $6,200 — of our $15,000 goal. We’re currently on-track to meet it (thank you all). However, we still need your help to reach 100%.

What’s ahead in 2018?
Member Lisa Gorrell will lead our 18th annual genealogy research trip to Salt Lake City in April and on March 3rd we will play host to the amazing Blaine Bettinger, also known as The Genetic Genealogist.  We hope you’ll consider one or both of these amazing genealogical experiences. Visit our Eventbrite page for registration.

Both of these exciting offerings help us raise needed funds for the society and library. We also have an interesting and constantly evolving slate of classes for you to choose from in the New Year.

Our genealogy community is amazing
In order to ensure that our society remains a leader in the genealogy field (in February, we'll reach our 120th anniversary), your help is needed.

You may be aware that we also have our Capital Campaign that has been raising money all year and will come to a close in Feb 2018. If you’ve contributed to this effort, then let me be the first to say “thank you”.  I want to stress that the Capital Campaign is for our long-term security, but our Annual Appeal is for our day-to-day expenses. Either way, the money will be put to good use.

Even with all the constant, rapid advances in technology, we’re managing to stay current and remain a relevant resource for scholarship, education and community because of your generosity.

Please donate today.

You make our success possible.

Thank you.

Annual Appeal: We're Almost There...

Ready to put us over the top?
The Annual Appeal for the California Genealogical Society so far has raised 88% percent — $13,170 — of its $15,000 goal. We only need $1,830 to meet our goal for this year.  Can we all come together and make it happen by Feb 1st?  We’re very close to meeting our numbers for 2016 (thank you all). However, we still need your help to reach 100%.

Treasurer Kathie Jones said, "So far, 133 members have given a little over $13,000.  I'm so happy to see that each year we're able to exceed our previous year's goal.  In 2015 our goal was $12,500, which we accomplished, and I'm hopeful that we'll do the same for 2016's Annual Appeal. Our average donation this year is now $99 per person, a definite increase from the previous year.  Thank you CGS members!”

Where does the money go?
Membership fees only cover 40% of our operating expenses; most of the rest comes from special events and tax-deductible donations from members like you.  Kathie says, "The cost of real estate in the San Francisco Bay area continues to be our number one expense for the society---meaning our rent consumes about 70% of our budget."

Our library, with thousands of volumes, is one of the premiere genealogy libraries on the West Coast, and is one of the main reasons that many of you joined the society.  Our member survey results showed that The California Nugget, our biannual genealogical magazine, is another huge draw for our members.

What’s on tap for this year?
Member Lisa Gorrell will lead our 17th annual genealogy research trip to Salt Lake City in April and on September 23rd we will play host to the incredible Judy G. Russell, also known as The Legal Genealogist.

We hope you’ll consider one or both of these enjoyable genealogical experiences. Both will help us raise needed funds for the society and library. We also have an interesting and constantly evolving slate of classes for you to choose from in 2017.

Genealogy community
In addition to the library, resources, trips, events and classes---it's the people that make The California Genealogical Society the valuable resource that it has become.  Without your devotion of time and resources, we wouldn't be a leader in genealogy.

Thank you for all that you have done and will do for us in the future.  Our future looks bright because of members and donors like you.

Please donate today.

You make our success possible.

Thank you.

Help us reach our $15,000 Annual Appeal goal

We need your help to achieve our goal
The Annual Appeal for the California Genealogical Society so far has raised 40 percent — $6,000 — of its $15,000 goal. We’re currently on-track to meet it (thank you all) and are ahead by approximately $1000 compared to the same time last year. However, we still need your help to reach 100%.

Treasurer Kathie Jones states, "So far, 68 members have contributed $6,000.  I’m encouraged that our members are digging deeper this year to support our resource-rich genealogy society and library. Our average donation this year has increased to almost $87 per person.”

Why is the money needed?
Membership fees only cover 40% of our operating expenses; most of the rest comes from special events and tax-deductible donations from members like you.  Kathie says, "The cost of real estate in the San Francisco Bay area continues to be our number one expense for the society---meaning our rent consumes about 70% of our budget."

2017 Goals
This year, the goal was set at $15,000 - $2,500 more than last year’s target to help us continue offering quality trips, classes, events and speakers for you, such as the world-famous Cyndi Ingle.  Cyndi’s seminar was sold-out and received rave reviews from the attendees.

We also led our first-ever trip to Washington, D.C. “Our genealogy research trip in November was a great success---we added almost $4,000 to our coffers and had a collegial group of genealogy-minded people who had a fantastic experience exploring all of the available federal and DAR records. I couldn’t be more happy with it!” exclaimed President Linda Harms Okazaki.

Linda also wants to remind you to check your mail to see if you have received the Annual Appeal letter that was sent out in mid-November.  If you haven’t already done so, please consider contributing to the society. "Don’t forget that there’s a 2016 tax deduction created by contributing before year-end. I also want to thank each and every one of you that have donated or have volunteered in some way this year. Our Members Make Us Possible

Happy Holidays!  Now that the holiday season has begun, I hope you’ll take a minute to think about some of our genealogy accomplishments this year and why you should be proud to continue supporting the California Genealogical Society through our Annual Appeal.

What were “firsts” for us this year?
  • We held our sold-out and well-received fall seminar with Cyndi Ingle, founder of Cyndi’s List.
  • We participated in our first ever East Bay Gives community day of online giving and raised $3,000.
  • We conducted in-house consultations in conjunction with Ancestry Day by the Bay.
  • We created a genealogy “summer camp” that was held on Thursday evenings in July and August.
  • We began a Young Genealogists group, an Irish Genealogy-focused Facebook page, and a Roots Magic Special Interest Group.

Our Library
We’re incredibly lucky to have an educational space for classes and events that brings us closer together as a genealogical community.  Isn’t it fun to meet people who have the same passion for genealogy as you?

In all seriousness, our library is the cornerstone of our organization, housing a collection of thousands of books, maps, periodicals, pedigree charts, manuscripts, vertical files, and other resources.

Have you been to the library lately?  If not, come to the library and access the numerous online subscriptions available including American Ancestors, Ancestry.com, Find My Past, Fold3, and HistoryGeo

Our History
In just over a year, the California Genealogical Society will reach a milestone, our 120th Anniversary. As we get closer to this achievement, the goal is to ensure that our society remains a leader in the field of genealogy. Your donation will help us to do that, and more.

Give to an organization that cherishes the past
At this time of year, we know that other charities and organizations are all competing for your time and resources. We also know that you are the reason that the California Genealogical Society continues to thrive nearly 120 years after our 1898 establishment.

Donate today and help us make the annual appeal a success.  Thank you.

Help us reach our Annual Appeal goal

We need your help to achieve our goal
The Annual Appeal for the California Genealogical Society has raised 64 percent — $8,000 — of its $12,500 goal.  Please help us reach 100%.

"So far, 95 members have contributed $8,000.  It’s wonderful to see the large number of donors from our committed membership,” said current Treasurer Kathie Jones.

Why is the money needed?
Membership fees only cover 40% of our operating expenses; most of the rest comes from special events and tax-deductible donations from members like you.

Kathie Jones stated, "Real estate in the San Francisco Bay area is incredibly expensive and as such, our rent (although reasonable by Bay Area standards) consumes 68% of our budget."

Our library, with thousands of volumes, is one of the premiere genealogy libraries on the West Coast, and is one of the main reasons that many of you joined the society.

Jones became the Treasurer this past year and has enjoyed the challenges of the job, as well as the camaraderie of her fellow volunteers.  "All of our volunteers tend to wear multiple hats, which contributes to the feeling of commitment that's apparent whenever you visit our library", she said.

2016 Goals
This year, the goal was set at $12,500 - $2,500 more than last year’s target to help us continue offering quality trips and speakers for you.
President Linda Harms Okazaki sent a letter to all members in November explaining, "In order to ensure that our society remains a leader in the genealogy field (in just over 2 years we'll reach our 120th anniversary), your help is needed."

The appeal helps support both our library and research services, which in turn has created our community of committed genealogy volunteers and members.

"We want to thank those who have already donated, plus get out a reminder that now's the time to get a 2015 tax-deduction by making a donation before year-end," says Okazaki.

In 2016 we are hosting a research trip to Washington D.C., in addition to our annual trip to Salt Lake City and our biennial trip to Boston.  Other near-term goals include hosting nationally and internationally recognized speakers, and giving back to the genealogy community by participating in indexing projects.

You make it all possible
Linda says, “So much has happened over the last few years in the world of genealogy and yet we’ve continued to move forward, especially in the last year.  Your support and commitment is the cornerstone of our success."

Please donate today.

You make our success possible.

Thank you.

Our Annual Appeal

The 2015 Annual Appeal is well underway and we're hoping for a great response!

At this time of year, we know that other charities and organizations are all competing for your time and resources. We also know that you are the reason that the California Genealogical Society continues to thrive so many decades after our 1898 establishment. In fact, our 120th Anniversary is just over two years away!

We are very proud of our library—we think it may be one of the reasons you joined. It is the cornerstone of our organization, housing a collection of books, maps, pedigrees, manuscripts, and more. It also is an educational space for classes and events. As essential as the library is to our identity, even more important are the members and volunteers who truly define us. Our organization is a gathering place for like-minded individuals dedicated to one thing: genealogical research.

In order to ensure that our library continues to be a model for genealogical research, we need your help. It is important that our computers are state-of-the-art, that our collection continually grows, and that our educational events meet the needs of our community. However, membership dues only cover 40% of our operating expenses. By donating to the California Genealogical Society, you will help us to prosper. You, and your gift, make a difference.

Today, we ask for your help. Please consider donating by check or online. Matching corporate gifts are always welcome.
