2013 Nominating Committee

President Jeffrey Vaillant has announced the reappointment of last year's Nominating Committee. Director and Corresponding Secretary Karen Lemelin will continue to chair the 2013 committee with general members Linda Okazaki and Jane Lindsey.

The committee is seeking nominees for several anticipated openings on the board of directors. Chairperson Lemelin stated, "We are looking for candidates who have the passion and commitment to participate in the future direction of the California Genealogical Society."

Nominees must be members of the society. If you are interested in exploring this opportunity or can suggest someone who may be a good candidate, please email Karen Lemelin.

The California Genealogical Society's bylaws specify the annual creation of a Nominating Committee in Article VII, Section 1: Nominations and Elections.

ARTICLE VII: NOMINATIONS AND ELECTIONS
Section 1. The Nominating Committee shall consist of at least three (3) members to be named not less that ninety (90) days prior to the Annual Business Meeting. The President shall appoint the Nominating Committee. The chairperson of the committee shall be from the Board of Directors and additional committee members from the general membership.
Section 2. The Nominating Committee shall submit its report to the Board of Directors and the Board shall give timely notice of nominations to the general membership prior to the Annual Business Meeting.

Section 4. Nominees shall be members in good standing in the Society.
Section 5. Members in good standing who are present at the Annual Business Meeting shall elect the Directors. A plurality vote shall elect.
Section 6. If there is only one candidate for an opening, the ballot may be dispensed with by general consent and the election held by voice vote.

Understanding Our Families, Understanding Ourselves: Genealogy Meets Family Systems Theory

Saturday, October 19, 2013
1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

California Genealogical Society Library
2201 Broadway, Suite LL2
Oakland, California 94612

Genealogy is more than building family trees with names, dates, and places. By looking at families at a "systems" level, you can learn how generations have an impact on one another. Join Ron Arons for a fascinating look at ancestry through the lens of Family Systems Theory. Ron will discuss a different kind of family trees – genograms – diagrams to map behavioral traits through multiple generations.

Register online.

The class is limited to thirty participants and is a free benefit of membership. Non-member fee is $20.00 (non-refundable) and can be applied towards membership on the day of the class.

Preregistration is required. Walk-ins will not be admitted. Registration confirmations will be sent to the first thirty registrants. Additional names will be collected and placed on a waiting list in case of cancellations.

Over the past twelve years, Ron Arons has given more than 200 talks internationally. While his specialty is researching criminals, his lectures cover a wide variety of genealogical topics. He has published two books: The Jews of Sing Sing and Wanted! U.S. Criminal Records: Sources and Research Methodology. In 2006, Arons won a New York State Archives grant to continue research about Jewish New York City criminals. In 2008, he appeared on the PBS television special "The Jewish Americans." Ron is working on a third book which will cover the topics of genealogy and family systems theory. Ron earned his degrees from Princeton and the University of Chicago.

Linda Okazaki sent this review of the 2012 workshop:
The box workshop was active and interactive with a lively group. Where else can you learn to create an archival box that is beautiful and functional, and have fun in the process? It was also nice to meet some new people, both members and non members. Thanks, Bill!
